August 2005 - Pamana Canal Authority Selects Inmarsat to Improve Transit Efficiency

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has chosen Inmarsat technology as the basis for a trial vessel tracking system to improve transit efficiency in one of the world’s busiest waterways. The ACP tracking system, being administered by Absolute Software Inc., will use Inmarsat C to track all vessels that have declared an intention to transit the Panama Canal; from the day the vessel sails from its last port, or seven days before its arrival at the canal, whichever is later. The tracking stops when the vessel arrives at the canal.

By tracking all approaching vessels, through polling the onboard Inmarsat C terminal, the authority plans to improve the accuracy of estimated time of arrival information, and thereby reduce waiting time for vessels transiting the canal. The service will be free to vessels, with the ACP absorbing all communication costs of the trial and billing to be handled by Absolute Software, Inc. Tracking is automatic, and vessels do not need to take any additional actions.

The ACP supports the IMO’s initiative for a global Long Range Identification and Tracking System,” said Jorge L. Quijano, Maritime Operations Director for the Panama Canal Authority.

The Panama Canal handles more than 14,000 transits annually, so the authorities need a system they can depend on to provide reliable tracking data”, said Brian Mullan, Head of Maritime and Aeronautical Safety Services for Inmarsat. “Inmarsat C, combined with Inmarsat’s better than 99.9% availability, provides that trusted capability. Inmarsat service provider, Absolute Software Inc, complements the Inmarsat C capability with seamless integration.

The trial begins on 18th August 2005.
